Nursing Maltese loses coat
Every time my female gives birth she begins to lose her coat especially
around her neck. After she quits nursing the pups she starts growing it
back. I have asked my vet and he says it is normal and nothing is going to
stop it. Is this true?

- It's not unusual for long coated dogs to "blow" coat (loose it)
after they have had puppies. Most generally do it after they wean them but
some also have a fair amount of blow during nursing. The production of milk
for the babies takes much of the nutrients the bitch is receiving and so
little is left over for the coat. I find that makeing sure my girls are
eating well, give them calcium supplements and some good vitamins help.
Make sure the food they are eating is high in protein and fat during this
time.
