Are people likely to be allergic to a Maltese?

Are people likely to be allergic to a Maltese? I'm trying to find a dog for my Daughter. She is allergic to just about everything. Please help.

• One could be very allergic to a Maltese. Many people are mistaken with their thinking that this is not so. One person I know personally, very recently had a violent reaction when coming in contact with their new Maltese pup. The woman had to be rushed to the hospital when her throat started swelling shut. I have heard however that chances are less with the Maltese than another breed of having an allergic reaction. If one has a history of allergies, I would ask your doctor first if he/she thinks a dog would trigger any problems.

• I adopted a maltese from a family who had a family member who developed extreme allergies to the dog and therefore had to give her up. If you know someone who has a maltese, you might try visiting with them and their dog or "borrow" the dog for a while and test it out.

• Anyone can develop an allergy to almost anything, but my experience has been that Maltese and certain other dogs are "hypoallergenic." My wife is allergic to cats and most dogs, but she has lived with Maltese dogs for years. Maltese and a few other dogs (maybe Yorkies?) have little to no dander and/or undercoat -- instead of fur, their hair grows like ours does. That's why they shed so little, too. Since dander is what many people with pet allergies are actually allergic to, these people should not ha ve a reaction to a Maltese. The other comments are right though; you'd better test your daughter's allergies against the puppy before you sink a few hundred dollars into one. I'm betting you won't have any problems. Good luck!

• I have a nephew that was allergic to all kinds of things as a child. He really wanted a dog and my sister-in-law did a lot of checking. Two of the best dogs for allegeries are poodles and Norwich terriers.

  I don't know how severe the allergic reactions are for your daughter, but one test might be find some reputable breeders of these certain breed, explain that you are looking for a dog for your daughter and would like to visit their kennels or with one of their dogs to see if there are any reaction before purchasing a dog.

  I would think that most reputable breeders would appreciate this because they would not want to sell a dog to someone that might have an allergic reaction and then later need to get rid of the dog.
