Maltese not coming when called/Letting us know she has to go out
We have a 5 month old female, she is very lovable and sweet. She was first
trained to wee wee pads, now we are trying to train her outside. She will
go outside, but we can't get her to let us know when she has to go out. I
take her out every so often, and if I ask her if she has to go pee-pee, she
will run to the door. But if I am busy or in another room and the urge
strikes her, she will go on the carpet. How can I get her to let me know
she has to go out? Also-- When she is outside she will not co me when we
call her. She loves for me to chase after her and I can never catch her. I
have tried bribing her with treats, whistling, clapping, nothing gets her
attention except whatever she is currently sniffing. It is very frustrating
to not be able to get her to come to me when i call. She chases my cats and
will chase them up into the woods near our house, she has no fear of running
far away from me. Any help on either of these problems would be
appreciated. Thanks--
- How about trying some of these:
- Put her on a leash (long lead) when you take her out. Call her. If she
doesn't respond, tug on the leash and pull her in. Reward her when she
responds.
- Put her on a regular schedule for going out. Soon she will get the
idea. Make sure it is always after she eats and after she has been drinking
a lot.
These are some of the ones I have used. Hope this helps.

- As for not coming when called this is a tough
command for some dogs to get. Your dog MUST come to you at all
times when you call it. If you say come then your dog must come
to you no matter what, where, when or what it is doing. My dog
will give up a BONE to come to me. So here goes: First enroll
your puppy in obedience classes. You will learn alot more than
I am able to type to you today. If your dog is NOT coming when
called I suggest using a different phrase of words like hurry up
lets go! etc. "COME" should ONLY be used when your dog can 1)
come back to you and 2) be correct if it does not. You must
start slow with the "recall" command. ALWAYS for now have your
dog on a leash. Tug in your direction if you give the command
come and dog doesn't. If it starts to come to you praise like
you just won the lottery!! Give a little treat. Letting your
dog know that you will always reward it by lots of praise and a
yummy treat will get your dog into you face quick. If you give a
different command like Let's go and the dog doesn't come around
by you, start and turn away and go in the opposite direction of the
dog. I suggest using an enclosed place first. Fenced backyard etc.
Most likely curiosity will bring the pup to you. Have a toy and
throw it up in the air pretend you are having a great time without
the dog. He will be thinking who? what? wait not without me mom!
Also use a candy wrapper and crinkle it to get his attention.
Don't wave it in the air, just look like you are very interested
in it. Once the dog comes around to you investigate clip on the
leash and you are off. Or repeat the command let's go and go
inside the house. Praising it all the time. NEVER NEVER punish
your dog if it comes to you. All your hard work will be washed
out the door!! Praise only no matter how upset you are! This
type of training will get your dog to want to be by your side
ALWAYS! I cannot stress enough NEVER leave your dog OFF LEASH
if you can not control it ON leash. Your dog should be on leash
or in an enclosed area not running free in the woods. Lots of
things can happen. Cars driving by, people taking pets, your
dog getting seriously hurt, or even worse becoming "lunch" to
a coyote or pack of loose dogs! Please try these suggestions and
get by to us on the board with a progress report! Enroll in
those puppy/obedience classes now!
