Inbreeding
My dog, Doodlebug is 2 years old and about to become a papa. We are
really excited and hope to take a female puppy and breed her to our dog
(her father). Will this present a problem? The AKC says the puppies can
be registered.
- Pam, what you are referring to is known as inbreeding. The truth of the
matter is, the most beautiful Maltese, the truest in type, are gained through
inbreeding, however, this is dangerous unless handled by an expert. Inbreeding
doubles up and intensifies all characteristics whether good or bad, and so the
resulting puppies can have very desirable traits or some very bad tendencies. Only fault-free
dogs should be mated. If there is any suspicion about its temperament, you should
not use this dog in an inbreeding program. Carefully check all pedigrees for at least
3 generations before making your decision. I absolutely would not consider
it unless both Maltese's are uniform in type, size and general appearance, are
good specimens in themselves and don't have a single common outstanding major
fault. You should be fully aware of all principles involved. Jay
