Fear of eye clip
We have a 9 month old female who is absolutely wonderful in everyway..
except for when it comes to having her hair around her eyes clipped. She
will not allow me to clip it at all, she completely goes nuts when i try. I
have bought tiny nail scissors and tiny hair cutting shears.. but nothing
can get near the area without her attacking instantly. She is obviously
frightened of the scissor, and as far as I know there has been no accidental
cuts before, but nevertheless, she will not allow it. What else
could I do to keep the hair out of her eyes and cut away the stained area?

- Hopper, my almost 2 year old, starts to bite when I try to clip.
The thing I do is put my hand around his muzzle (not to hurt
him) and say NO! He ussally gets the point. Another tip is to
clip the hairs around the eyes when she's tiered. That way you
have more control over the matter.

- I learned this technique from puppy school. It was in reference to
introducing teeth brushing, but it may work in this case too. Every time
you bring out the trimmer, show it to your dog and give it a small treat.
Let it sniff it. Don't do anything with it. Just let it look at it. Do this
for a very short time. The next day, do the same thing. Bring out the
trimmers, let her sniff, give a treat. Day after day, or when-ever, keep
doing this, always extending the sniff, touch routine until you can ac
tually get in a snip or two. Eventually, she will learn that treats come
with the clipping and there is nothing to worry about. This will take time
and patience, but it may just work.
