Plucking hair from Maltese ears
I'm going to get a maltese puppy. I've heard a lot about plucking
the hairs from its ears. How and Why do you pluck it.
Jackie Florio
- I have the same concern. My puppy isn't much of a puppy any more (10
months), and as she is getting older she is getting many more hairs growing
from the inside of her ears out. They don't seem to be bothering her, but I
just want to be sure that I am not supposed to doing something about them
before they become a problem. How SHOULD the ears be maintained?
Nick
- I was told by my vet that I need to pluck the hair from my maltese's ears or
they will develop an ear infection. I know the hair can grow quite thick.
They don't like it but we have not had any problems with the ears. I usually
pluck the hairs from the ears about once every 5 to 6 weeks. Good luck.
Tully
- I usually check the hair in my maltese ear before I bathe her.
I do not know if I do it right, but I usually put the ear powder then began
to pull out the hair using my fingers. I know there is a tool in the market
that acts as a gripper and looks like a small scissor.
- When I got my puppy they showed me how to get the hair out of
her ears using special ear powder, then gently pulling the hair
out. I never quite got the hang of it, and Lucy hated it. Now
I rely on the groomer to do it. She goes once a month and the
ear-hair removal is part and parcel of the grooming, along with
the nail clipping, hair cut, bath, etc. She probably doesn't
enjoy it any more than when I tried to get the hair out, but at
least it gets done by someone and is over with, I would imagine,
much more quickly when a professional does it.
