Is a crate a cage?

This is a stupid question....I keep hearing the word crate, is this different than a cage? I just picked up my 8 week old maltese puppy today, but I am concerned because he cries when he is in his cage for even a second....If I block him off in a small area in my kitchen, do you think that will be okay? I don't want his crying to get my in trouble with my landlord....I was also wondering what i should do with the dog when I go to work at night...How much food and water should I leave him? I work 12 hour midnights and don't want him to be without adequated food and water....Any help or answers anyone has....I would appreciate it...

• Yes, a crate and cage are the same with different names. Why not get a good book for new pet owners not really breed specific but a simple book for first time pet owners would be helpful. The library would probably have something like that. I wouldn't under any circumstances leave him in a crate for 12 hours or more while you travel to work, work, then travel home. Thats not only cruel and inhumane but just the way a Maltese (or any dog) deserves to be treated. Do you maybe have a freind or family member who could watch your puppy and socialize with him while he's growing up? If hes not lonely, he won't cry. Its heartbreaking hearing stories such as yours. • When I got my maltese she was 12 weeks old and I was told she couldn't be left longer than 4 hr without a "bathroom break" crated or not. Their bladders aren't well enough developed. Leaving s puppy for 12 hr is going to be a problem for both of you, I'm afraid.

  Lucy is now 1 and she needs to walk at least at 8 hr if not 6. I happen to work close enough to walk her at noon. Can you get a pet sitter to come in and walk your baby? How about a neighbor? The couple of bucks it would cost would be well worth it for both of you!
